This should consist of things like:

  • Contracts from the Removal Company.
  • Contracts for your new home.
  • If you are renting, any rental papers received from the landlord or estate agents.
  • Directions to the new property, for both you and the moving company.
  • Any final bills.
  • Letters from utility suppliers about moving your services to the new home.
  • Any dispensation documents from your local council for parking on the day of the move. Information can be found here for various areas – Bromley, Croydon, Sutton

Keep both a hard copy and also a copy on your phone or tablet so you have them to hand to answer any questions that may arise on the day of the move. This means you can quickly handle any disputes.

2. Organising Your Stuff – Declutter!

This is the perfect time to have a clear out. Go through all your things and anything you don’t need, put into piles for selling, donating to charity and the bin. This will mean you’ll have less to pack and a new start in your new home.

3. Book Everything As Early As Possible

This will include booking your removal company for the date you will be moving, any painters and decorators, new furniture and electrical goods.

If you are preparing to move everything yourself, be sure to get a truck with a ramp or lift on it. It will save you time and prevent possible injury.

5. Get Any Equipment Ordered Early

Get any essentials you need to help with your move booked in or bought and delivered early. This could include:

  • Cardboard Boxes – Try and get double walled stitched boxes for extra strength. Remember you might need large and small boxes.
  • Bubble Wrap – An essential to keep your items from breaking and moving in transit.
  • Packing Tape – Secure your boxes shut.
  • Marker Pens – Handy to have to mark the boxes with what they have in them so you know if you need to be extra careful.
  • Bin Bags – You will have a lot of rubbish on the day so be sure to have some available.
  • Stanley Knife – Always very handy to cut boxes and tape.
  • Sheets & Covers – These could be old blankets or sheets but are useful to stop things getting scratched.

For larger moves you might need to rent some things like:

  • Trolleys – Really help to move heavy boxes and mean you’ll be doing minimal carrying.
  • Dollies / Skates – These are used to put under large items like sofas so you can push them on wheels.
  • Furniture covers – Heavy duty covers can help prevent any tearing or staining from permanently damaging your sofas and armchairs.
  • Professional Moving Covers – These are thicker and therefore better at protecting large items that may be easily scratched or fragile.
  • Tie Down Straps & Rope – These are pretty essential in transit as it you can tie down big items or sets of boxes so that they do not move around and potentially damage things.

6. No T.V, No Internet, No Heating… No Fun

Be sure to get all your utilities sorted for the new house. You don’t want to have to wait 2 weeks for your internet to be installed. Get the date booked in and keep a record of the booking.

ALSO don’t forget to cancel these same utilities in the old house, you could be paying for somebody else’s internet whilst also paying for yours.

You will also need to organise forwarding your mail and moving your TV license.

7. Start Packing ASAP!

Once you’ve organised everything and thrown out loads of unnecessary rubbish you will want to begin packing all non-essential items. This could mean winter or summer clothes, books, DVDs and anything else you’re not using but want to keep.

Also try and designate a room in your house where you can put all these boxes that won’t be intrusive in your day to day life leading up to the move.

8. Make Yourself and Your Kids an Essentials Bag

On the night before you move it is best to get together a pack of essentials for each family member.

Include the following:

  • Toothbrush
  • A toy, cuddly animal, portable games console (be sure its fully charged) or anything else to entertain the kids
  • At least one change of clothes.
  • A snack, drink and sandwich to keep everyone going.
  • Any medication and also a plaster or two.
  • You will be tired after moving, so you won’t want to unpack multiple boxes trying to find things.
